As students return to school, drivers are reminded to adhere to safety laws when approaching a school bus that is picking up or dropping off students.

Drivers may proceed after stopping for a bus when the bus resumes motion, the bus driver signals the motorist to proceed, or the flashing lights are turned off and the stop arm signal is no longer extended.

Penalties for illegally passing a stopped school bus include:

- A first offense results in a mandatory minimum fine of $300 and a three-month suspension of the driver's license.

- A second offense or subsequent conviction within five years carries a mandatory minimum fine of $1,000 and a one-year suspension of the driver's license.

- Additionally, motorists cited for illegally passing a school bus are not eligible for court supervision.
