Curriculum

• The Curriculum Committee met on February 13th. Items of discussion:

o Met with first and second grade teachers, CES special education teachers, and Title teachers to discuss our current phonics instruction. We spent an extended amount of time discussing UFLI phonics, the program we integrated into the kindergarten classrooms this year. Teachers were asked to send any more questions, comments, or concerns to me throughout the next week. Overall, the feedback was positive. An obstacle that needs to be overcome is how to intertwine our current reading curriculum with UFLI. My next step will be to evaluate the teacher’s editions of the MyView curriculum to decide which pieces will be kept and which will be switched with UFLI.

o Would like to have two paid work days for teachers that use UFLI to watch implementation trainings and prepare materials for the next year.

o Discussions over the kindergarten report cards have started within the team. We would like the report cards to align to STAR, KIDS, and the state standards. This will be a project that will take an extended amount of time.

o Started curriculum observations at CJHS.

o Currently analyzing Illinois Learning Standards for Social Science to determine overlaps and gaps in social studies instruction in our district.

o Will begin running usage reports for online programs that we have purchased to determine if programs will be renewed/need more guidance to be more effective.

o CEC – Intentional Play vs. Free Play – defined the differences so teachers understand the benefits of both and what they look like.

o CES – A curriculum survey administered, showed staff felt the Math curriculum is the strongest and Phonics is the weakest and needs support.

o CJHS –8th graders have replaced the traditional AR points for reading and started Battle of the Books. This is a competition/incentive-based program factoring in pages and chapters read, types of books, genres, length and difficulty. This has been a huge success in engaging the students in reading.

o CHS – ACT prep work is underway.
