Senate Republicans in Illinois are urging Governor JB Pritzker to address a projected budget deficit exceeding $3 billion without increasing taxes on residents and businesses. The Governor's Office of Management and Budget has reported an estimated shortfall of $3.16 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, prompting concerns about how this gap will be closed.
Since taking office, Gov. Pritzker has increased state spending by over 30%, reaching a record $53 billion in the last fiscal year. Senate Republicans have criticized this spending increase, suggesting it relies on temporary federal aid that has become a long-term financial burden.
The announcement of the deficit follows tax hikes implemented earlier this year to support a budget that included more than $1 billion in benefits for non-citizens. State Sen. Jil Tracy emphasized the financial struggles faced by Illinoisans, stating that they cannot afford additional costs from what she describes as a budget crisis caused by Gov. Pritzker.
In other news, a federal judge in East St. Louis ruled Illinois' assault weapons ban unconstitutional. Enacted in 2023, the legislation faced legal challenges from gun owners and advocacy groups claiming it violated constitutional rights. Judge Stephen P. McGlynn granted an injunction against the ban but stayed it for 30 days while Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed an appeal.
Senator Tracy expressed hope that efforts would shift towards addressing violence through stricter enforcement against illegal gun possession and improved mental health support.
The fall Veto Session began on November 12 with lawmakers convening in Springfield. Senate Republicans held a press conference urging Gov. Pritzker not to raise taxes amid the budget deficit concerns.
Additionally, during this session, lawmakers recognized veterans as part of their annual Veterans Day tribute and discussed Senate Bill 3968 concerning carbon sequestration injections near sole-source aquifers, which remains under committee consideration without a vote.
Meanwhile, the Veterans Memorial Display is now open at the Illinois State Capitol until November 25, offering visitors an opportunity to honor veterans' service through photos and stories.
Finally, the Illinois Department of Agriculture launched its Illinois Product Holiday Box featuring nine locally crafted items available for purchase online or at their Springfield location.
