It’s another hot day, and experts are offering tips to stay cool in extreme heat.
Staying out of the sun is crucial. For those who must be outdoors, wearing sunscreen (at least SPF 15) and a wide-brimmed hat is recommended. Seeking shade or staying under awnings can also help.
Avoiding overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities is advised. Lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible can prevent sunburn.
Consuming plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids is essential, even if one does not feel thirsty. Water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions are preferable, while carbonated drinks should be avoided.
Keeping indoor lights low or off, drawing shades, and avoiding oven use can help maintain a cooler environment at home. Ensuring rooms are well-ventilated with air conditioners and fans is also important. If air conditioning or fans are unavailable, keeping windows open may provide some relief; however, it is noted that fans will not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures reach the high 90s.
Taking advantage of cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores and malls during periods of extreme heat is suggested. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours daily can reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
