John Wood Community College Curriculum Committee met May 8.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Curriculum meeting convened at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Present were Dr. Randy Greenwell; trustee, Mr. Don Hess; trustee, Dr. Bryan Renfro; president, and Dr. Shelley Barkley; vice president of academic & student affairs and Kristina Johnson; note taker.

Administration discussed three new 1-credit hour courses within Adult Education, specifically Career Pathways Bridge, which share a common structure; assessment determines the appropriate course placement for students. The courses are intended to help prepare adults with limited academic or limited English skills for credit-bearing postsecondary education and training leading to employment, Career Pathway courses offer contextualized instruction aligned with students’ interests and skill levels, which helps identify potential career paths.

Additional agenda items included a new 1-credit hour course in Fine Arts, introducing an additional ensemble for string players which creates more options for students and eliminates the need for independent study as in the past. MUS 153, “Chamber Music Ensemble” will offer flexibility to accommodate emerging needs.

The discussion also covered Illinois' Ability to Benefit State-Defined Process, and its initiative to provide essential support to eligible adults, enabling them to achieve success comparable to their peers in obtaining postsecondary credentials and degrees.

Meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
