West Central Community Unit School District 235 Board of Education met Feb. 6.
Here are the minutes provided by the board:
The meeting was called to order by President Schaley at 6:04 p.m. in the elementary cafeteria. The following board members answered roll call: Bigger, Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, Higgins, Schaley, and Vancil. Also present were Superintendent Day, Recording Secretary Jaime Shultz, J. Kirby, Megan Harris, Jeff Harris, K. Lafary, Matt Link, Mother of Student #25003, and Bethany Nannen.
PUBLIC COMMENT
There was no one present who wished to address the Board on any agenda items.
HEARING OFFICER
Motion by Higgins, seconded by Bigger to appoint President Schaley as the presiding hearing officer. On roll call the following members voted aye: Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, Higgins, Schaley, Vancil and Bigger. 7- 0 Motion carried.
CLOSED SESSION
Motion by Clark, seconded by Bigger to enter closed session pursuant to the Open Meeting Act - 5 ILCS 120/1 et seq. to hear a student discipline case at 6:06 p.m. Majority of Ayes by Voice Vote. Motion carried.
The board took a short break and reconvened in the unit office conference room at 6:08 p.m. On roll call the following members answered roll call: Bigger, Chockley, Clark, Gullberg, Higgins, Schaley, and Vancil. Also present is Superintendent Day. The following participated by invitation of the Board: J. Kirby, B. Nannen, Mother of Student #25003 and M. Link.
Motion by Bigger, seconded by Chockley to return to open session at 7:55 p.m. On roll call the following members voted aye: Clark, Gullberg, Higgins, Schaley, Vancil, Bigger, and Clark. 7-0 Motion carried.
The board took a short break and reconvened in the elementary cafeteria at 7:57 p.m.. On roll call the following members answered roll call: Clark, Gullberg, Higgins, Schaley, Vancil, Bigger, and Chockley.
ACTION ITEM
Motion by Clark, seconded by Bigger that the 10-day out of school suspension for Student #25003 shall be upheld and that Student #25003 be expelled from West Central CUSD #235 for violating the District Student Handbook by threatening students and imitating the use of a weapon. This expulsion is for two calendar years and shall be in abeyance in order to allow said student to attend an alternative placement as determined by the IEP team. Student #25003 may be eligible for reinstatement at West Central CUSD #235 on February 7, 2026, upon successful participation at the alternative school placement and a final IEP team decision. Until that time said student is not allowed on any West Central CUSD #235 campus or grounds for any reason. The following members voted aye on roll call: Gullberg, Higgins, Schaley, Vancil, Bigger, Clark, and Chockley. 7 - 0 Motion carried.
ADJOURNMENT
Motion by Bigger, seconded by Chockley to adjourn at 8:00 p.m. Majority of Ayes by Voice Vote. Motion carried.
