Rep. Randy Frese mentions that repealing the SAFE-T Act should be a veto session priority.
In a Nov. 14 news release, Frese discussed the need to repeal the SAFE-T Act.
“More than half of Illinois’ state’s attorneys have joined a lawsuit to block the SAFE-T Act. A motion filed last week stated, “Because both the substance of (the Act) and the process through which it was enacted are in flagrant violation of the Illinois Constitution, this statute should be stricken as void in its entirety.” You can read more here. Repealing this dangerous Act must be a Veto Session priority,” Frese said.
Frese was first elected to the Illinois House in 2015. A Republican, their legislative experience includes serving on the Health Care Licenses and Museums, Arts, & Cultural Enhanceme. Frese is a state representative who resides in Adams County, according to the Illinois House.
The law known commonly as the "SAFE-T" Act calls for no cash bail starting in January for a variety of crimes, including some felonies. It sets up new standards for use of force by police and has been criticized by many, including a majority of the state's attorneys in Illinois, who filed lawsuits challenging the law. In late October, the Illinois Supreme Court consolidated more than half of the cases and called for the Kankakee County case to be the lead.
As the fall Veto Session began this week, Republican leaders-elect have said that they're interested in Repealing the SAFE-T Act. Rep. Tony McCombie, new House Minority Leader-elect said on Wednesday that repealing the act was her caucus' preferred route, according to the State Journal-Register.
