Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville), the GOP candidate for governor, has renewed calls for a special legislative session to help families amid record inflation.
Earlier this year, he repeatedly called for a special session but has not received any response from Pritzker.
"He's either too busy running for president or doesn't care that Illinois people are hurting under his failing leadership," Bailey said of the incumbent governor.
Bailey sees Pritzker's gas tax as "disastrous."
“It’s been more than 60 days since I called on Gov. Pritzker to call a special session of the legislature to repeal his disastrous gas tax hike and address economic hardships in Illinois," Bailey said. "What has been the response from Pritzker? Nothing."
In 2019, Pritzker passed legislation that increased the state's gas tax. Illinois has the nation's second-highest gas tax.
“(Gov. JB) Pritzker had a chance to do what’s right and remove or suspend this tax. But instead, he failed,” Bailey said while visiting an Effingham gas station. “Instead, billionaire JB decided to merely freeze the increase and throw a couple of pennies at struggling families here in Illinois. That’s a disgrace. That’s unacceptable”
