John Wood Community College Board of Trustees Executive Committee met May 12.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Executive Committee me at 1:30 p.m. Attendees were Ms. Diane Ary, and Mr. Bob Rhea trustees, (via Zoom) Mr. Larry Fischer, trustee, (in-person) Mr. Michael Elbe, president, and Ms. Leah Benz, executive assistant, note taker. Additional attendee for financial Board retreat information was Mr. Josh Welker.

Mr. Welker provided financial data to the Executive Committee on comparison of financials to peer schools. He received this comparison by requesting audit reports of these peer institutions. He categorized and highlighted pertinent information. Information include FY21 taxes, tuition and fees and other revenues. FY21 expenses by program, and transfers. FY21 expenses by type, salaries, benefits, contractual services, general materials, supplies, travel and meeting fixed charges, utilities, capital outlay and other. (Mr. Welker left the meeting)

May Board of Trustees Agenda items

There were no business items listed for the May Board meeting.

Grants – Four were brought forward for the May meeting:

authorization to accept funding from Illinois Community College Board for a grant titled Transitional English Instruction RE: Amount $13,000

authorization to submit a grant application to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for a grant titled Pulse Boiler Replacement Project RE: Amount $195,000

authorization to submit a grant application to Illinois Community College Board/IL Department of Human Services for a grant titled Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity RE: Amount $616,693.68 (over 3-year period)

authorization to submit a grant application to IBHE- Illinois Board of Higher Education for a grant titled Illinois Cooperative Work Study RE: Amount $21,840

Discussion items

Budget Update - Presented by Mr. Welker listed above. Budget for FY22 is based on 34,000 credit hours which is less than this previous year.

Board Retreat Details - The Executive Committee review the board retreat agenda and activities outlined for the day. Cabinet members and presidential direct reports will be in attendance until 11:00 a.m. Presentations will include Cyber Security – Minimizing Risk, Retaining and Recruiting qualify employees, and Institutional Growth Strategies. The afternoon portion will be meeting the presidential search consultant.

Presidential Elbe will send the take-a-ways from the September 2021 board report prior to the retreat for discussion and follow-up.

Search consultant - The search consultant has provided an agenda for the afternoon discussion. Items include selection of search committee members, salary and compensation package, qualifications, and characteristics of the next president, what challenges will the new president face, and where you see the college in 5-years.

FYI: Representative Rodney Davis will be in Quincy on May 26. President Elbe will be providing a tour of the main campus and Workforce Development Center for him.
