John Wood Community College Board of Trustees Curriculum met May 16

John Wood Community College Board of Trustees Curriculum met May 16.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The meeting convened at 10:30 a.m. Attending virtually via zoom conference were Mr. Mike Elbe, president; Mr. Andy Sprague, trustee; Ms. Paula Hawley, trustee; Dr. Laurel Klinkenberg, vice president of instruction, and Kristina Johnson, note taker.

The new course in Developmental English addresses the state mandate to decrease the number of semester hours in Developmental English for students. The course CMN 099, College Readiness Strategies, is a combination of CMN 080, Understanding Written Communication, and CMN 090, Interpreting Written Communication. Students will gain skills needed for college-level coursework in one semester. The CMN 090 course will be offered in the Fall of 2022. Another course being developed is the Transitional English high school course, which also decreases developmental coursework for students entering JWCC.

The Computer Science Department has completed major revisions to the program to better align with industry changes. Many courses have been withdrawn as they are no longer relevant curricula as the industry has changed. The Department has updated the Web Design Certificate title to “User Experience Design”. This certificate stacks into the Graphic Design AAS Degree and the Web Development AAS Degree.

The Curriculum Committee’s goal is to streamline the process of retrieving signatures and simplifying the curriculum approval form. The committee is gathering feedback through completing the newly created Mach form to revise as needed. The intent is to have the online form available for the Fall of 2022.
