Quincy conservative activist Mecki Kosin sees Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s progressive tax proposal being about a lot more than just dollars and cents.
“This is really about changing the Illinois constitution and giving legislators carte blanche to tax anyone however and whenever they want,” Kosin told the Quincy Reporter. “This is in no way about a fair tax. The reality is there are only about 16 billionaires in Illinois and eight of them are from the governor’s family, and we already know how he feels about taxes from the way he removed toilets from his own home to avoid them.”
Kosin cautions the tax the governor has been peddling since his days of being a candidate only assures more of the same. A new report by the Tax Foundation details how the state’s competitive position would dramatically fall if the progressive tax proposal Gov. J.B. Pritzker has been pushing since his days as a candidate becomes law. If the measure passes, researchers report Illinois’ overall ranking would tumble all the way down to 47th in the U.S. for business competitiveness, ahead of only New Jersey, California and New York.
"This would change our constitution to the point of giving the legislature total power to do as they will with taxes.” Kosin added. “Giving Illinois’ reputation, I can’t see how anyone would trust that. I’m a resounding 'No' to the whole progressive tax idea and am telling everyone I know to vote the same way while providing them with all the reasons why.”
Kosin argues now is the time for voters to take a stand and not back down.
“We’re at the point at of no return,” she said. “To get back to solid ground, most everyone in Springfield needs to go so they can be replaced by honest people. In the past, I’ve thought we didn’t need term limits because experience was a good thing. I’ve changed my mind with that as it’s become clear power seems to corrupt in Springfield when you have it for too long.”
