John Wood Community College Curriculum Committee met Sept. 15.
Here is the minutes provided by the committee:
The meeting convened at 2:00 p.m. Present virtually via zoom conference were Mr. Don Hess; trustee, Mr. Mike Elbe; president, Dr. Laurel Klinkenberg; vice president of instruction, and Kristina Johnson; note taker.
The Catalog timeline and process was discussed. Current catalog pages are sent to the respective departments for review and edits. October curriculum meeting is the last meeting with curriculum changes for next academic year catalog. The catalog is sent to printer in January with copies arriving sometime in March. President Elbe mentioned when reviewing content to align with any Board policy changes or updates.
Next, information was shared about two grants that are in the September Board packet.
Strengthening Community College Training- Illinois Consortium Grant (USDOL Grant). ICCB coordinating and facilitating this application process with 13 Community Colleges.
Focus will be the accelerated Career Pathway approach and Immersive Learning. Immersive Learning uses Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). Augmented reality adds layers into the real world where virtual reality replaces what people see and experience.
A few items that funding can be used for are development and delivery of new curricula, purchasing equipment, and implementation of integration tools.
The Consortium is in the process of determining what 2-3 sectors will be targeted. JWCC suggested Manufacturing and Health Sciences which are being considered.
The next grant discussed briefly was the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) grant. JWCC is submitting projects for this grant which includes Agriculture department curriculum development and associated equipment needs. New and revised curriculum will focus on conservation, i.e. water and wind energy.
The Board Curriculum meeting will be moving to Mondays, time yet to be determined.
