John Wood Community College Board of Trustees met July 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The meeting convened at 2:30 p.m. Present were Mr. Jim Gay, trustee; Mr. Mike Elbe, president; Mr. Don Hess, trustee (via zoom); Dr. Laurel Klinkenberg, vice president of instruction (via zoom); Kristina Johnson, note taker.

• ICCB 5-Year Program Reviews were discussed, which included:

o Fine Arts Academic Discipline Area

•Performing arts continues to investigate recruiting strategies to increase enrollment in music and drama. The visual arts position was not filled for FY21 and will be re-evaluated for potentially filling for FY22.

o Humanities Academic Discipline Area

•This academic discipline has had a success rate above 80%, is strong, growing, and has maintained high enrollment. The curriculum revisions are up-to-date, and the success rate continues to be reviewed.

o Adult Ed & English and ESL

• The program is offering Bridge courses to help students transition to college courses. President Elbe mentioned the rate of literacy among the surrounding counties which has been an on-going concern.

o CTE Programs

• The CTE Program 5-year ICCB template was reviewed and discussed. The different template indicators include: Need, Cost Effectiveness, and Quality.

• When completing Program reviews, department chairs, faculty, and administration answer specific questions during the comprehensive review. Dr. Klinkenberg discussed the timeline and process used to complete the reviews. Dr. Klinkenberg and Josh Welker collaborate to review and edit. Submission to the ICCB is not later than September 1st.

• Mr. Gay inquired about what criteria is used to assess program/academic discipline cost effectiveness. The Committee discussed how to determine CTE program viability and sustainability. Feedback from employers and Advisory Councils is key in reviewing programs to ensure our graduates have the skill set necessary to be successful and employable.

• Miscellaneous Instructional Updates:

o The spring student survey was discussed last meeting. Mr. Gay asked the follow up question in response to the results, “How can JWCC improve online instruction?” Dr. Klinkenberg mentioned some faculty are currently attending a virtual teaching conference and will share information with colleagues in the fall.

o Dr. Klinkenberg mentioned Student Services is working on drafting a survey to reach out to our adult learner population. Advisors have been hearing adults are still questioning whether to attend this fall due to Covid-19 challenges. This has impacted the adult learner population enrollment numbers.

• Other items

o A payroll/compensation item has been brought forward by the union. This item will be deferred to closed session.
