QUINCY PUBLIC LIBRARY: Check it Out | Staff Picks

Books

Quincy Public Library issued the following announcement on Feb. 11.

This week, we recommend The Princess Plan by Julia London. At 28 years old, Eliza Tricklebank is resigned if not comfortable with her role as a spinster living with her father and living vicariously through her sister and her best friend by helping them publish a gossipy women’s gazette. But when she gets the chance to attend a masquerade ball in honor of the visiting crown prince of Alucia, Eliza jumps at the possibility of seeing a real prince. Once there, not only does Eliza get to see the prince, she actually speaks to him, although her conversation with his secretary was much more substantial and kinder. When Eliza learns the next morning that his secretary was found murdered after the ball, she is sad for the prince but thinks no more of it until an anonymous message is left at her home implicating the prince’s field marshal. Of course, the women decide to print the juicy tidbit in their gazette, which somehow finds its way to the prince. Suddenly Prince Sebastian is calling at Eliza’s home demanding an answer. Accustomed to people fawning over him his entire life, Sebastian is intrigued by the bold and outspoken woman who doesn’t seem to care if she shows him the proper deference or not. Now Sebastian and Eliza are embroiled in the mystery of who killed his secretary. The more time he spends in her company, the more Sebastian comes to realize Eliza is exactly who he needs, but how can a royal marry a commoner? Julia London introduces an engaging new cast of characters with the first book in her new historical romance series.

Jim Gaffigan is a popular comedian who is also the father to five children under the age of 14. He insists that his wife, Jeannie, should be canonized not just for putting up with him and taking care of their kids, but also for collaborating with him on his book, television, and comedy projects. Jeannie believes she is actually raising six children, but does so happily with plenty of love and patience. In her book, When Life Gives You Pears, Jeannie Gaffigan shares her story of how she and her family handled her life-threatening diagnosis of a pear-sized brain tumor with courage, resilience, faith, and most of all, humor.

When you think of meditation, do you envision sitting alone on the floor in the lotus position, chanting quietly, while incense burns slowly in the corner? Meditation doesn’t require a specific place or sitting position or even additional accessories. Meditation simply requires you to become mindful of your thoughts and emotions, clear your thoughts, control your breathing, and pause. You can do this anywhere, anytime. In the book Stress Less, Accomplish More author Emily Fletcher explains the basic tenets of meditation and shares the specific techniques of Ziva to help you lessen the tension and anxiety in your work and personal life.
