State Senator Jil Tracy has criticized Governor JB Pritzker's proposed $55.2 billion budget, describing it as the largest in Illinois history and requiring an additional $1 billion in taxes. According to Sen. Tracy, this spending plan marks a nearly 40 percent increase since the current administration began in 2019.
The Fiscal Year 2026 revenue estimate totals $55.4 billion with $55.2 billion allocated for spending. Sen. Tracy argues that this budget overlooks necessary decisions to support Illinois residents and their families.
"Gov. Pritzker has made it abundantly clear that Illinoisans are not his priority," said Sen. Tracy. "By any financial measurement, such out-of-control spending is not sustainable, and puts Illinois’ fiscal future in jeopardy."
One controversial aspect of the budget is a proposed delivery tax, which Sen. Tracy claims would impact all residents while primarily benefiting Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Transit Authority.
"It’s a broad-based, statewide tax hike on nearly everything you order online," she stated, noting that starting January 1, 2026, a $1.50 delivery tax would apply to most home deliveries.
Senator Tracy expressed her willingness to collaborate with lawmakers from both parties to achieve a balanced budget with structural reforms aimed at boosting the economy and creating jobs.
Fiscal Year 2026 will span from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
