At a time when Illinois families are facing economic challenges, state Democrats are proposing a $6 billion tax increase to support Governor JB Pritzker's budget. This proposal would raise state spending by 37% since Pritzker took office, amounting to an increase of approximately $15 billion.

The plan includes new taxes on digital advertising, capital gains, corporate income, and an estate tax increase. Critics argue these taxes could harm small businesses and the state's economy by increasing consumer prices and reducing job opportunities. Illinois already has the highest overall tax burden in the country.

State Senator Jil Tracy (R-Quincy) criticized the plan, stating it would lead to more government dependency and fewer jobs.

In another development, State Senators Jason Plummer and Terri Bryant have called for the withdrawal of Latoya Hughes' nomination as Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections. They cited safety failures and lack of leadership qualifications as reasons for their opposition.

The senators highlighted issues within the prison system such as drug-related inmate deaths and rising staff assaults. They criticized Governor Pritzker's administration for not implementing necessary reforms.

Senate Republicans also opposed a new bill expanding SNAP benefits for college students. Senate Bill 1298 allows students enrolled in public college programs to qualify for SNAP benefits without meeting work requirements. Senator Tracy argued this move overextends SNAP’s original intent and increases state spending without proper funding mechanisms.

On May 13, firefighters were honored at the 32nd Annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighter Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony in Springfield. The event recognized firefighters who lost their lives in service to their communities.

Additionally, the Illinois Department of Transportation is providing $400 million for local transportation projects across the state. Cities and counties can apply for funding until June 1, 2025. IDOT is hosting conferences to assist with applications.

Lastly, Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day was held this week with supporters advocating for Second Amendment rights at the State Capitol. Organized by the Illinois State Rifle Association, participants marched from downtown Springfield to discuss legislative issues related to gun rights with lawmakers.

Senator Tracy emphasized the importance of this event amid ongoing attempts by some lawmakers to restrict Second Amendment freedoms.
