State Senator Jil Tracy | Illinois General Assembly

As the Illinois General Assembly prepares to reconvene on January 28, State Senator Jil Tracy has called for a bipartisan legislative agenda. The Republican senator emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility, public safety, and support for struggling families in Illinois. With the inauguration of the 104th General Assembly and the second term of the Trump Administration, there is an opportunity to address state challenges collaboratively.

Senator Tracy expressed concerns over Governor JB Pritzker's approach towards federal administration, which she believes could risk critical federal funding essential for Illinois' budgets. As lawmakers face a projected $3 billion budget deficit, Tracy advocates for cooperation to foster prosperity, economic growth, and enhanced public safety.

In another development, local leaders in Illinois are encouraged to join the Broadband Breakthrough program. This initiative by the Benton Institute for Broadband & Society and the Illinois Broadband Lab aims to provide tools and knowledge necessary for securing funding and building broadband partnerships. Applications are open until January 31 on a first-come basis. Webinars covering various topics will be available through the Illinois Office of Broadband.

On tax matters, the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) will start accepting 2025 income tax returns from January 27, aligning with IRS timelines. Taxpayers can file federal returns free via IRS Direct File linked to MyTax Illinois for state filings at no cost. Early filing with direct deposit is recommended for faster refunds.

Taxpayers can also benefit from an increased Child Tax Credit and expanded Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit this year. IDOR remains vigilant against fraud after preventing $145 million in fraudulent refunds last year. Assistance is available through IDOR's helpline or website.
