John Wood Community College Executive Committee met Dec. 12.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Executive Committee met on December 12, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. in room C252 Student Administrative Center, president’s area.  Mr. Bob Rhea, Ms. Paula Hawley, and Mr. Andy Sprague trustees participated via Zoom. Dr. Bryan Renfro, president, and Ms. Leah Benz, executive assistant, note taker participated in-person. 

December Board packet items were reviewed.  This included the consent agenda items, personnel items, business items and grants.

The Curriculum items reviewed addition of CMN 221 – Introduction to Public Relations; renamed Vet 101 to Small Animal Veterinary Assistant, and VET 102 to Large Animal Veterinary Assistant.  And a new pathway for a AAS degree in Ag Mechanics

Grants included one acceptance of funds for Swipe Out Hunger, and two grant submissions; one for Rural Pathways and one for Housing Insecurity.

The business items included adoption of a Resolution and Certificate levying additional taxes, a Resolution to levy taxes and Certificate of the tax levy, authorization to pay second half of the ICCTA dues for 2024 in the amount of $3,832, approval of a laptop rental fee, and authorization to accept the bid from STL LED, LLC for LED lighting.

Two items regarding property were discussed and will be share in closed session.

Discussion items

Recognition of 50 years of service of legal counsel - The committee was informed the brief video shown at the Quincy Country Club would be shared at the Board regular meeting in honor of Mr. Rapp.  Mr. Conover and Mr. Elbe would also be saying a few remarks depicting his career.  State Senator Jil Tracy will present a Certificate of Recognition to Mr. Rapp.

Sex Offender Board policy - In reviewing policies, it was noted the College needed to establish a policy/procedure in regard to sex offenders now that minors will be on campus and at off campus sites.  A policy/procedure was drafted and reviewed by legal counsel.  The policy will be presented at the December meeting.

Pathway grant - The College was invited to submit an application and an agreement by December 6, 2024, for the Rural Guided Pathways Project.  This phase 2 portion of Rural Pathways is a three-year project in which a national cohort of up to 32 rural community colleges will work with each other and with community partners in their regions to implement evidence-based, institution-wide reforms grounded in the guided pathways framework. Further details were provided to the committee in their packet.

Presidential evaluation/timeline - The committee discussed the process of evaluating the president.  Due to the timeline this was done last December.  To be consistent with previous years and the new contract proposed timeline was shared, and process discussed for the upcoming months in 2025.   Previous year’s questions were shared with the Executive Committee to review for any changes/revisions.

Summer Hours - The committee heard a proposal of current summer hours and possible alternative to our current procedure.

Question was raised on the status of the science lab renovation.
