The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget (GOMB) has released a report projecting a $3.16 billion state budget deficit for Illinois in the upcoming fiscal year. This projection raises concerns about potential tax increases. State Senator Jil Tracy, a Republican from Quincy, attributes the deficit to increased state government spending, which she claims has risen by 32 percent since Governor JB Pritzker took office. Tracy points out that earlier this year, Democrat leaders passed a $53 billion budget that includes nearly $1 billion in higher taxes and over $1 billion in benefits for noncitizens. She warns that continued high spending could jeopardize Illinois’ fiscal stability and residents' financial security.

In education news, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) is offering free workshops to help students complete college and financial aid applications statewide. The U.S. Department of Education plans to launch the 2025-2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in December. Completing the FAFSA can unlock various forms of financial aid, including scholarships and grants like the Pell Grant and the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant.

November marks Adoption Awareness Month, celebrated by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. The department acknowledges families who have adopted 19,347 children over the past decade. Special Adoption Day celebrations will occur on November 22 in Chicago and Marion, November 23 in Rockford, and December 27 in Edwardsville. Last fiscal year saw 2,184 adoptions finalized.

The Illinois State Fair has announced its holiday sale with Mega Passes priced at $70 for unlimited carnival rides and Jumbo Passes at $80, which include access to the Giant Slide. Prices will increase by $10 starting January 1, 2025. Admission Bargain Books providing entry to the fair are available for $45, while Seasonal Infield Parking Passes cost $40.
