The FBI is warning Illinois residents of a rise in incidents of “jugging,” where a victim is robbed after withdrawing money from an ATM. Here’s how you can protect yourself.

According to the FBI, "jugging" involves criminals observing individuals who withdraw large sums of cash from ATMs or banks and then following them to another location to rob them. This crime has been increasing in frequency, prompting the agency to issue this advisory.

Residents are advised to be vigilant when using ATMs and should consider taking the following precautions:

1. Be aware of your surroundings and look out for anyone who might be watching you.

2. If possible, use ATMs located inside busy locations rather than isolated areas.

3. Avoid withdrawing large amounts of cash at once.

4. Consider having someone accompany you when making large withdrawals.

5. If you suspect someone is following you, do not go home; instead, drive to a police station or a crowded area.

The FBI urges anyone who believes they are being targeted or have witnessed suspicious behavior related to "jugging" to contact local law enforcement immediately.
