John Wood Community College Curriculum Committee met March 13.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Curriculum meeting convened at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Present were Mr. Larry Fischer; trustee, Dr. Bryan Renfro; president, and Dr. Shelley Barkley; Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs, present via zoom, Ms. Angela Greger; trustee and Kristina Johnson; note taker.

Administration discussed proposed Education courses and modifications within the Early Childhood AAS degree, enhancing students' field experience. The curriculum restructuring aims to align more closely with Gateways pathways. The degree plan now features new courses while keeping the same credit hours. The practicum structure shifted from one three-credit-hour course to two separate ones: Early Childhood Practicum (2 credit hours) and Infant-Toddler Practicum (1 credit hour). Each practicum pairs with a seminar for lectures, homework, and Gateways assessments: Infant-Toddler Seminar (1 credit hour) and Early Childhood Seminar (2 credit hours). Consequently, EDU 175 "Social Issues in Educating Children" will become an elective EDU course, freeing up three extra credit hours.

Administration also deliberated on the recommended Fine Arts course ART 247 “Digital Photography”. The course provides fundamental digital photography skills, appealing to student interests and serving as an entry point to other art courses. Aligned with the planned Mass Media Communications program, it supports broader educational pathways.

Additionally, advising proposed renaming DRA 103 from "Introduction to Drama" to "Introduction to Theater" to alleviate student confusion, aligning with titles used by other colleges for clarity on course content.

Meeting adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
