John Wood Community College Board of Trustees Executive Committee Sept. 13.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Executive Committee met at 1:00 p.m. Attendees were Mr. Bob Rhea trustee, (via zoom) and Mr. Larry Fischer, trustee, (in-person), Mr. Andy Sprague, (in-person), Mr. Michael Elbe, president, and Ms. Leah Benz, executive assistant, note taker. Ms. Diane Ary was absent.

September Board of Trustees Business Agenda items

•Approval to revise Board policies reviewed by the sub-committee of the Board

•Approval to pays 1st installment of ICCTA dues

•Approval to transfer 1,400,000 from Operating Funds to Operations and Maintenance Restricted Fund

•Acceptance of the proposal from Keck heating & Air Conditioning for HAVC rooftop replacement unit

•Acceptance of the proposal from Peters Heating and Air Conditioning for a replacement chiller for Building C

•Acceptance of the proposal from SJ Smith Company for a plasma table for our welding program

Grants

•Two grants are being requested for acceptance of funds. One from IGEN for LED auditorium lights and one from ICCB for PATH for nursing

Personnel

•It was noted the status change of Mike Tenhouse to Director, Agricultural Sciences Complex was included in the personnel report.

•A second item will be discussed in closed session.

Discussion items

WDC Groundbreaking – This event was held on September 7. Great community support was present. The Foundation will have a capital campaign in support of this project.

AAIM – American Association of Industrial Management was recently contracted to review JWCC compensation plan. This was as a result of the campus climate survey results from employees on the concern. The College has sent 26 job descriptions for review and market analysis. No specific timeline has been established at this time.

Lawyers for Learning - A proposal was presented by Rebecca Rapp on a service to students at no cost or liability to the institution. This service will be by referral to assist students who cannot pay to have a minor record expunged in order to proceed with their education. The committee who met with Ms. Rapp recommended proceeding with this service for students.

HLC – Our team peer HLC leader is Rod Brown. He held a Zoom meeting with President Elbe. The committee heard the team will meet our Board of Trustees on October 24 (no time or location has been determined). Also, the Board of Trustees is invited to attend the September 30, all college HLC meeting. An e-mail will be sent to all trustees.

Fall Retreat – The Fall retreat is scheduled for October 17. The Board discussed topics and events of the day. An agenda is being drafted. This will also when the Board will review final presidential candidates.

Enrollment for fall – The committee heard that head count for fall compared to head count last fall is up by 62 students, but credit hours are down 223. Projections are showing 4.3% increase at this time.

Pepsi Agreement - Administration met with representatives from Pepsi to review this agreement which has expired. Our volume has decrease, since COVID. A five-year agreement is being proposed. This will be presented in October to the Board with the details.

Board Christmas party – With all the activities in December and a planned farewell for the president the Executive Committee proposed the annual Board Christmas party is not held this year.

Presidential Search – Bob Rhea shared the presidential search committee selected 9 candidates to participate in a virtual interview during the dates of September 19-21. Upon completion of these interviews the search committee anticipates selecting 3-4 top candidates to participate in on-campus interviews. A tentative date of October 17 has been reserved for a Board retreat at which time the Board anticipates narrowing the selection to a final prospect for consideration and approval for the October / November meeting.

Other - Wine Pull is September 22; President Elbe’s farewell is December 1, and College wide employee Christmas event is December 16.
