JWCC and Blessing Health System Present a First Aid Class for College for Life

40

John Wood Community College issued the following announcement on Nov. 19

John Wood and Blessing Health System presented a hands-on session to help a group of JWCC students be better prepared in case of an emergency.  Two Blessing Health System nurses delivered basic first aid training to students from John Wood Community College’s College for Life (CFL) program.

Accidents happen. The latest statistics from the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states there are nearly 100 million visits per year for treatment of accidental injuries between emergency rooms and physician offices across the country. While no one can stop accidents, people can be better prepared to help themselves and others when accidents occur.

Michele Westmaas, JWCC coordinator for CFL shared, “Community partnerships are beneficial in so many ways. Speakers bring knowledge and skills into the classroom and guests get to know our students. CFL Instructors do a fantastic job of bringing the community to the classroom.”

“I liked the presentation very much,” said JWCC CFL Student Jenna Edwards.  “I liked learning about the different first aid tips and in particular how to help someone who is choking.”

JWCC enriches lives through learning by providing accessible educational opportunities and services at an exceptional value.  CFL extends that mission to students with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) allowing JWCC to better reach the community as a whole.

Diane Vose, JWCC manager of regional centers and community-based outreach shared, “Before this program, inclusive educational programs after high school didn’t exist. College for Life is another way to help students prepare for adult life in the community.”
