Quincy activist Mecki Kosin argues desperate times call for desperate measures regarding Illinois state Gov. J.B. Pritzker's (D) latest showdown order.

“Businesses are dying on the vine and we’ve got our so-called leaders in Springfield doing stuff like this,” Kosin told the Quincy Reporter.

“People are trying to survive in these times and the governor isn’t making it any easier for anyone," said Kosin.

Kosin said she completely stands behind the stance taken by McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally, who recently vowed not to enforce the governor’s latest shutdown orders banning indoor dining across the region.

Like Kenneally, Kosin said she sees it as an abuse of power.

“Instead of the governor just making these unilateral decisions unfairly impacting certain people, we need to be letting everyone take personal responsibility for themselves,” said Kosin, “I really think people have had enough.”

With Pritzker now threatening to strip businesses that violate his orders of state licenses, Kosin warns COVID-fatigue is only spreading more rapidly.

“Everyone I know has had enough and then some...All we hear about is COVID and COVID deaths. We’ve gotten to the point where we don’t hear anything anymore about flu cases, cancer deaths or anything that isn’t COVID. I think people are starting to ask questions, starting to realize that something seems off about that," said Kosin.

Kosin stated she doesn’t put any stock in what she sees as the governor’s idle threats, like stripping business owners of their licenses for defying him.

“Let him try it. What he’s doing is unconstitutional to begin with and he can’t win in any legal fight. He’s just drunk with power and people are suffering because of it," said Kosin.

Kosin said she wonders if the governor has truly ever considered just how many people are being further victimized by his actions.

“There are just so many ripples from what he’s doing,” said Kosin. “At the end of the day, people have to be able to live.”
