Quincy Medical Group issued the following announcement on Nov. 12.

The Quincy Medical Group (QMG) Foundation is hosting the Third Annual Steak Eating Challenge to benefit the Moments That Matter fund. Moments That Matter was developed to grant bucket list wishes for patients facing life-limiting, terminal illnesses.

This year’s Steak Eating Challenge has been modified due to the current pandemic. Instead of a live event like in past years, this year’s challenge was pre-recorded and will be aired via Quincy Medical Group’s YouTube channel, Facebook page, and the Moments That Matter Facebook page this Saturday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. for viewing at home. The “T.V. episode” is free for all viewers to watch.

The “T.V.” episode” features seven competitors who each raised funds to advance through various food challenges at local restaurant stops on the way to the final challenge, which was a 40 oz. ribeye at Boodalu Steakhouse in Quincy. This year’s competitors are Tim Bliefnick, Jack Cornell, Dr. George Crickard III, Mellissa Douglas, Jim Hansen, Rick Little, and Kent Stegeman. Competitors have raised more than $18,000 to support the mission of Moments That Matter.

Moving forward with the event this year was important for the QMG Foundation to continue to support our local patients facing terminal illnesses, explained QMG Community Relations Specialist Morgan Parker.

“Many events have been canceled or postponed in 2020, and we were determined to find a way to bring the Steak Eating Challenge Fundraiser to the community to support patients with terminal illnesses. Creating experiences and meaningful memories is more important than ever, and all funds raised will benefit patients in the tri-states,” Parker added.

“Oftentimes, medical needs and expenses can become so great that the desire for other experiences is not always the top priority,” Director of Community Relations Laura Tenhouse shared. “Through Moments That Matter, we seek to change that by talking to patients and families about experiences they would like to share before their illnesses progress to a point when that may no longer be possible.”

Any patient with a life-limiting, terminal illness may be granted a Moments That Matter wish, regardless of where they are receiving care or even if they have decided to forego active treatment to focus on comfort and quality of life.
