Blessing Health System issued the following announcement on Aug. 24.
Alison Cantrell, RN, 5 South, became the 53rd Blessing Hospital nurse to receive the international DAISY Award. She received the award during a ceremony on August 24, 2020.
Through the DAISY award program, patients or their family members, visitors, doctors, hospital staff members or volunteers may recognize the extraordinary care provided by nurses.
Alison was nominated by family members of a woman who passed away as the result of complications from a stroke. The stroke occurred during the early portion of the COVID-19 response in the region and because of the virus, the family could not be with their mother when she passed. Alison helped the family make a FaceTime connection with their mother.
“Alison held the phone so everyone could have a moment to talk to mom, share memories and say their final goodbyes. When Alison called to inform us that she had passed, you could hear the pain in her voice, it was as if she could feel our pain,” the nomination read in part.
“Alison was such an amazing asset to Blessing Hospital. She was our angel who watched over and made our mother feel safe and comfortable in her last moments. Without Alison, we would have had no way to say goodbye, to have had any type of closure, and our mother would not have had someone’s had to hold onto in her final moments. What Alison has done is nothing short of amazing and she definitely went above and beyond what her job entails. She is truly and angel,” the nomination concluded.
DAISY stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System.” The family of a 33-year- old man, who died of an immune system disorder, began the program in 1999 to honor his memory by recognizing extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference in the lives of people by the work they do every day. More than 4,000 healthcare providers worldwide participate in the DAISY Award program.
DAISY award nomination forms are located on all nursing units throughout Blessing Hospital, other locations on the 11th Street campus and on the internet at blessinghealth.org/patients/recognize-team-member.
