City of Quincy Traffic Commission met June 8.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

The monthly meeting of the Traffic Commission was held in the City Council Chambers and via Zoom. The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. with the following members present:

Physically Present: Ald. McKiernan, Steve Bange, Joe Henning, Ed Holthaus, Jeff Mays

Virtually Present: Ald. Uzelac

Others: Ald. Entrup, Ald. Ernst (virtual), Ald. Finney, Ald. Mast, Chuck Bevelheimer

1. Approval of Meeting Minutes

The minutes of the May 11, 2020 meeting were approved as distributed.

Motion: Henning          Second: McKiernan          Motion Carried

2. Public Comment

3. New Business

a) Alderman Ernst’s referral to study the intersection of 31st and Lindell Avenue for the possibility of stop signs;

Discussion: Alderman Ernst stated residents would like the stop signs removed.

Engineering staff feels signs should remain on Shirlen Drive since the streets are offset.

Action: Remove stop signs on Lindell Avenue and traffic on Shirlen will stop for traffic on Lindell.

Motion: McKiernan          Second: Uzelac          Motion Carried

b) Alderwoman McKiernan’s request to reinstate parking on Locust Street between 4th and 5th Streets;

Discussion: The Commission discussed the reasons for the current parking restrictions.

Action: Deny request for the removal of the “No Parking” zone.

Motion: Henning          Second: McKiernan          Motion Carried

c) Alderman Mast’s request for a “Children at Play” sign on Manor Hill Drive;

Discussion: “Children at Play” signs are not recommend by MUTCD.

Action: Deny request per MUTCD standards.

Motion: Bange          Second: McKiernan          Motion Carried

d) Alderman’s Ernst’s referral to striping turn lanes on Oak Street at 48th Street;

Discussion: Blessing Hospital requests that turn lanes be added east of the 48th & Oak Street intersection.

Action: Motion to strip Oak Street between 48th and 52nd Streets with a center turn lane.

Motion: Holthaus          Second: McKiernan          Motion Carried

e) Alderman Entrup’s referral to the extension of the bicycle lanes on Bonansinga Drive from Cedar Street south to Broadway;

Discussion: The Commission discussed the pros and cons of striping bicycle lanes on Bonansinga Drive from Cedar Street to Broadway.

Action: Table for one month and request input from the Park District and Friends of the Trail.

Motion: Bange          Second: McKiernan          Motion Carried

f) Alderman Entrup’s referral to place a crosswalk on Bonansinga Drive at Parker Heights and Bob Bangert Parks;

Discussion: The Commission discussed placing a crosswalk on Bonansinga Drive. There are concerns about having a crosswalk without a path on the west side of Bonansinga Dr.

Action: Table for one month.

Motion: Bange          Second: McKiernan          Motion Carried

The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
