The Quincy Police Department has decided to keep the three new police officers who were facing layoffs on the force until at least October.
According to KHQA, the police union has used accrued sick time to allow the three officers to stay on the force. In October, Chief Rob Copley will reevaluate the situation. The officers could be facing layoffs if the department's financial situation remains the same or worsens. If finances improve, the officers could remain in the department.
The three new officers were sworn into the force earlier this year, but had to be sent home from basic training due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the police department is having financial troubles, the Machinists Union voted to keep raises, according to KHQA.
However, those raises will require positions be eliminated, City Administrator Jeff Mays told KHQA. Positions that were removed were in the water department and a typist for the Quincy Police Department.
