Quincy Fire Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 20.
This past weekend the Quincy Fire Department responded to 3 structure fires in a period of approximately 27 hours. While this type of frequency of structure fires isn’t typical for us, it does happen occasionally.
Always know that your fire department is training and preparing for this scenario as well as countless other types of emergencies.
Here is a breakdown of this series of structure fires:
At 3:08 AM on Saturday morning, Engines 6, 2 and 4 responded to 2211 Maine Street for a report of smoke coming from an electrical outlet in a wall. Fire crews found fire in a wall cavity and used a water extinguisher to douse the flames in the wall. Additional wall material was removed to ensure that the fire had not spread up the wall cavity. Smoke was cleared from the home and crews returned to quarters.
At 6:28 AM on Saturday morning the same shift responded with Engines 5, 2 and 4 to 924 Payson Avenue for a report of fire coming from the rear of the structure. As crews from Central Station turned onto 9th street, the Incident Commander radioed that he could see heavy smoke and called for an additional Engine Company to respond as well. Engine Company 3 was dispatched to the scene. Heavy fire was found at the rear of the structure by the crew of Engine 5. The fire was extinguished within a few minutes and the interior of the structure was searched for victims and fire extension. Smoke was cleared from the interior of the structure and crews returned to quarters.
At 7:05 AM on Sunday morning, Engines 5, 2 and 4 responded to 1100 Washington Street for heavy smoke coming from a detached garage. The crew from Engine 5 found heavy smoke and forced open an overhead door and extinguished the fire. Two vehicles as well as other contents were in the garage at the time of the fire. Crews continued with overhaul to extinguish hot spots. Once this was completed, crews returned to quarters.
The estimated combined value of the properties saved through the efforts of the fire crews this weekend is in excess of $500,000.
