CITY OF QUINCY: Meet Robert Copley, Quincy Police Chief

Police 08

City of Quincy issued the following announcement on Nov. 11.

Meet Robert Copley, Quincy Police Chief. His career began as a cadet with the Jacksonville Police Department. After a great learning experience during his year as a cadet, at only 19, he tested for the Quincy Police Department. In 1980, he was hired as a patrol officer where he stayed for 12 years. In 1992 he transferred to the Detective Division as a youth investigator. His duty was to investigate crimes where juveniles were victims or suspects. After four years, he was promoted to sergeant, overseeing the youth unit. Two years later, he was promoted to lieutenant, and went back to patrol in 1998. Then, after working the 3-11 p.m. shift as the watch commander, he tested for the Chief position in 2004. Copley has held the Chief of Police position for the past 14 years.

He says, “Personally I have learned that we all have flaws, and I still make mistakes, you just have to learn from them. I have become a more rounded cop; I am more understanding of what it takes to change, live and to make a difference. I have validated the idea that it doesn’t matter where you come from, but who you are as a person.” He says, “I became a police officer because it looked like an exciting job that I would enjoy, thanks to all the police shows I watched as a kid. You quickly develop a since of making a difference in the community. After 38 years this job still excites me. There is nothing else I would want to do.”
