Quincy Public School District 172 students suspended 2,824 times in a single school year

Quincy Public School District 172 reported 2,824 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 2,824 students during the year. That equates to 41.8 percent of the 6,757 students enrolled.

Of the 1,737 in-school suspensions, 1,227 were given to boys and 510 were given to girls, including 1,155 elementary or middle schoolers and 582 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 1,400 incidents. There were 183 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 1,157 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 1,087 out-of-school suspensions, 800 were given to boys and 287 were given to girls, including 752 elementary or middle schoolers and 335 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 768 incidents. There were 177 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 452 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
