Democratic lawmakers in Springfield have proposed Senate Bill 2254, which would permit convicted sex offenders to live closer to schools, playgrounds, and childcare facilities than currently allowed. The bill suggests reducing the required distance from 500 feet to 250 feet. It also seeks to lower penalties for registry violations from felonies to misdemeanors and reduce the registration period for the Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry from 10 years to five years. Provisions to waive registration fees for indigent offenders are included.
In contrast, Senate Republicans are advocating for more stringent measures to hold offenders accountable. Their proposed legislation, Senate Bill 284, aims to close loopholes by prohibiting plea deals for severe offenses and placing stricter restrictions on convicted offenders. The bill also seeks to expand restrictions on where convicted child sex offenders can work or volunteer and prevent their presence in facilities serving minors.
Separately, the Illinois Senate has adopted Senate Joint Resolution 12, which designates 2026 as the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Year. This resolution highlights Illinois’ historical role in Route 66, noted as the first fully paved highway state and the road’s starting point. State Senator Jil Tracy remarked, "Route 66 is more than just a road, it is a symbol of American freedom and exploration and rightfully deserves recognition." The resolution will proceed to the House of Representatives for further review.
In another initiative, the Illinois Treasurer’s Office announced the "Cream of the Crop" photo contest, inviting students from ages 8 to 18 to participate by submitting photos that represent Illinois agriculture. Submissions are accepted until June 13, and participants may enter up to two photos electronically. The contest features three age categories with prizes of Bright Start scholarships of $1,000, $500, and $250 for the top three winners in each category.
