For those seeking assistance with energy bills, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is currently available for eligible households. This program aids with natural gas, propane, electricity bills, and furnace support. Applications are open until August 15, 2025, or until funds run out. LIHEAP offers one-time payments directly to energy providers on behalf of recipients. Last year, over 333,000 households benefited from this program.

In legal news, Mike Madigan, the former Illinois House Speaker known for his long-standing influence in Springfield politics, faces a federal corruption trial starting Tuesday at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse. Madigan's trial includes Michael McClain, his confidant who was previously convicted of bribery-related charges involving Madigan. The prosecution alleges that Madigan led a criminal enterprise to boost his political power and financial gain for his associates over nearly ten years.

Additionally, residents in northern states such as Illinois may have the opportunity to witness the Northern Lights this weekend. The optimal viewing time is expected to be from midnight on Friday into early Saturday morning.
