Women's Basketball Starts Fast, Competes Despite Losing Effort

20

The Quincy University women's basketball team fell 58-48 to Truman State University in a GLVC matchup at Pershing Arena on Thursday (February 10) evening.

The first quarter started off slow, with the first points not being scored until over three minutes had passed. The Hawks' first points came off a jumper by Beth Matas Martin with 6:31 remaining, tying the game at 2. Two free throws from Sarah Nelson later, the Hawks took the lead 4-2 with 5:54 remaining and kept it for the rest of the quarter. When the buzzer sounded, the score was 15-6 Hawks.

The second quarter also started slow for the Hawks, with their first basket of the quarter coming with 7:37 remaining, with a Dami Adeyinka jumper making it 17-8 Hawks. QU managed to hold the lead for the majority of the remaining time, but the game went to halftime tied at 24.

The second half started disastrously for QU, with the Bulldogs going on a tear and the Hawks not scoring at all until nearly halfway through the quarter, with an Adeyinka jumper making the score 37-25 in favor of TSU with 5:05 remaining. The Hawks were able to spend the remaining time closing the gap, but it wasn't enough to take the lead, with the game going into the final quarter 41-40 Bulldogs.

Sadly, as the fourth quarter went on, it proved to be the closest the Hawks would come to regaining the lead. A jumper from Martin resulted in QU's first points of the quarter, making the score 44-42 TSU with 7:53 remaining. However, the Hawks were stopped in their tracks afterwards, resulting in the final score of 58-48 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Beth Matas Martin led the Hawks with 14 points in 36 minutes of play. Grace Flanagan scored 11 points in 24 minutes, and Sarah Nelson scored 10 points with 7 rebounds in 36 minutes. Emma Knipe pulled 7 rebounds in 27 minutes of play
