Quincy University issued the following announcement on Nov. 6
The Quincy University football team rushed for a season-high 312 rushing yards but fell to Southwest Baptist 47-31 in the final home game of the season on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 6).
QU won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half in Saturday's home finale. The Bearcats struck on their first drive with a 24-yard pass with 12:15 on the clock to go ahead 7-0. Quincy was able to quickly answer with an 11-play, 82-yard drive that was capped off by an 8-yard touchdown reception by senior Chris Poindexter.
On SBU's next drive, the Bearcats marched down to QU's 21-yard line before being stopped on third down by Will Henegar and Marcel Scott. The Hawk defense forced a field goal which was good as the score moved to 10-7 SBU with 1:53 left in the first.
As the game moved to the second quarter, the Hawks were forced to punt on their own 27-yard line when the snap sailed over the punter's head and Bryce Broussard had no option but to smack the loose ball out of the back of the end zone to prevent an SBU touchdown. The Bearcats grabbed a 12-7 lead.
On the ensuing SBU possession, the Bearcats scored in three plays to extend their lead to 19-7 with 12:40 left in the first half.
After the Hawks were forced to punt on their next possession, captain linebacker Peyten Chappel made a play for the defense by stepping in front of a pass for his fourth interception of the season.
The Hawks too full advantage of the turnover, and Tionne Harris found A.J. Hardin three plays after the sudden change on a 34-yard touchdown strike. Quincy trailed 19-14 with 7:22 left before halftime.
Quincy's defense came up with a clutch turnover on the next SBU drive when senior Will Henegar forced a fumble in SBU's backfield then recovered the loose ball himself.
Unfortunately, the Hawks were unable to take advantage after a 42-yard field goal attempt by Michael Klotz sailed just outside the uprights.
SBU scored with four minutes left before halftime and both teams went to the break with the score at 26-14.
At the start of the second half, running back Taylor Temple provided a jolt of energy after ripping off a 76-yard run from QU's 11-yard line all the way to SBU's 13-yard line. The Hawks were kept out of the end zone and Michael Klotz came on to attempt a 30-yard field goal. His kick was good and the score moved 26-17 SBU.
The Hawks forced a missed SBU field goal on their next defensive possession, but were unable to capitalize on the offensive end.
SBU scored at the end of the third quarter and at the beginning of the fourth to put things out of reach at 40-17 with 14:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Miles Cheatum scored his first touchdown of the season from 1-yard out with 7:12 to play to make the score 40-24.
The Bearcats scored one more time in the final quarter, then QU's Keith Nemasango grabbed a 9-yard touchdown pass from Harris to bring the score to 47-31. This ended up being the final score as the Hawks dropped their fifth straight game.
Taylor Temple finished the day with 20 carries for 176 rushing yards as the Hawks plowed ahead for 312 total on the ground in the loss.
