Quincy Medical Group issued the following announcement on May 13.
The Quincy Medical Group (QMG) Foundation recently established the Dr. Michael K. Ouwenga Scholarship to support high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in healthcare.
Two local high school seniors were awarded the scholarship on May 6. This year’s recipients are Caroline Deters, daughter of Andrew and Jennifer Deters, and Erica Pasley, daughter of Sara Pasley and the late Michael Pasley. Each recipient received a scholarship in the amount of $5,000.
Deters will attend the University of Iowa and pursue a degree in pre-physical therapy with plans to earn a doctorate in Physical Therapy. Pasley will attend Casper College in Casper, Wyoming, to pursue a degree in biology and pre-med with plans to attend medical school.
QMG Community Support Specialist Kayla Baumann shared, “The QMG Foundation is honored to partner with the Ouwenga family to support local students in their goals of pursuing a career in healthcare. Dr. Ouwenga was a well-respected physician at QMG, and we’re honored to carry on his legacy through this scholarship in his name.”
Dr. Ouwenga, QMG urologist and Board Member, passed away unexpectedly in January of 2019 at just 43 years old. The scholarship was made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Ouwenga’s family, who wanted to honor his memory and lay down tracks where he lived. The family’s hope is that scholarship recipients exhibit the characteristics that Dr. Ouwenga embodied: scholarship, leadership, and service.
