Quincy activist Mecki Kosin said the time has come to stand up to Gov. J.B. Pritzker so Illinois businesses can survive the pandemic.

“Many of the states that are doing well in job numbers also have COVID numbers that look better than here in Illinois,” Kosin told the Quincy Reporter. “We’re still one of the states locked down and we’ve all seen that doesn’t work. But we have a tyrant in charge as governor who’s not willing to give up his power over people and we’re all suffering because of it.”

The latest Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) data shows Illinois has lost jobs two out of the last three months from September to December. This decline comes  when much of the country is showing signs of stabilizing after having the past seven months with economic and job growth.

The bulk of the job losses across the state have come in the leisure and hospitality industry, which lost 27,400 jobs during the month of November. With Pritzker's ban on indoor dining still in effect, Kosin worries things may get worse before they get better.

“We’re to the point where standing up to Gov. Pritzker is a necessity if you want to have any chance of your small business surviving,” Kosin told the Quincy Reporter. “He’s one of the tyrants running around just doing whatever he wants with his edicts with no regard for how it’s hurting people.”

Kosin points out that all of this is happening at a time when the governor continues to entertain the thought of increased taxes.

“Our economy is fueled by small business and we’re losing more of them every day and all the governor can think about is more taxes,” Kosin said. “It seems the governor wants everyone depending on the government for survival. You call that socialism.”

Kosin said she worries what the future could hold if the state doesn’t change course quickly.

“The downward spiral will continue and this will not be the same America,” Kosin told the Quincy Reporter. “Right now, we’re just cowering under the power of the government.”
