Mercantile Bank of Centralia issued the following announcement on Sept. 27.
The FBI is warning of a recent phishing scam that appears to be targeting payroll systems in order to steal employees’ direct deposits. Posing as human resource employees, these criminals send fraudulent emails that ask recipients to update their direct deposit information. The emails include a link to a fake website designed to steal usernames and passwords that are then used to infiltrate the real payroll system. Armed with these credentials, the fraudsters login as the employees and reroute bank account information to steal the victims’ paychecks.
