Quincy University Hawks Football issued the following announcement on Aug. 30.
The Quincy University football team began its season Thursday (Aug. 30) against Division 1 Indiana State University. The Hawks fell to the Sycamores by a final score of 49-0.
Play-by-Play
1st Quarter
Indiana State took a quick 7-0 lead, scoring on its opening possession.
The Hawks offense stalled on its first two possessions. On QU's third offense series the Hawks went three and out and were forced to punt.
A mishandled snap on the punt attempt gave the Sycamores the ball on the Hawks three-yard line.
Indiana State took advantage, scoring to increase the lead to 14-0. The Sycamores took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter.
2nd Quarter
Both offenses were held in check throughout the second quarter.
The Hawks defense created a turnover on downs with just over four minutes to play in the second quarter.
Cody Leonard met the Sycamore runner in the backfield and gave the Hawks the ball on the 50-yard line.
The Hawks offense could not take advantage and were forced to punt.
Indiana State used a nine play, 80 yard drive on its next possession to take a 21-0 lead. The lead remained 21-0 heading into the half.
3rd Quarter
The Hawks offense had its best opportunity to score in the game on its second possession of the third quarter. QU marched the ball to the Sycamores three-yard line. The Hawks were unable to score after being turned away on a fourth and goal.
Indiana State scored with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter to make the lead 28-0.
The Sycamores took advantage of a Hawks fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Indiana State recovered the fumble and took over on the Hawks eight-yard line.
Two plays later, the Sycamores scored to extend the lead to 35-0.
Fourth Quarter
The Sycamores scored twice in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 49-0.
Indiana State finished with 339 yards rushing on 62 attempts.
