QUINCY UNIVERSITY: QU Communication Program Hosts “Broadcasting Bootcamp”

Quincy University issued the following announcement on Aug. 16.

A platoon of Quincy University communication students is returning to campus a week early this fall for an intensive look at the daily lives of broadcasters. The school’s communication program is hosting its first ever “QUTV Broadcasting Boot Camp” where students will hear from area professionals and workshop principles of the industry. Sessions include finding and pitching story ideas, producing a newscast, creating captivating video, and anchoring a newscast, weather and sports. The camp will conclude with students producing content for a half hour program to air live on QUTV’s Facebook page.

“In our business there’s nothing more valuable than hands-on experience,” said Travis Yates, associate professor of communication. “Students do receive that throughout the semester, but this experience is unique in that it mimics the workday of a multimedia journalist.”

The Broadcasting Boot Camp has a heavy focus on new technology being utilized in QU‘s broadcast center. The facility was completed last fall and features a state-of-the-art control room and news integration software from Ross Video.

“The sooner students can master the technical side, the better they can begin to focus on the storytelling aspect of the job,” said Nora Baldner, assistant professor of communication. “This camp will help them develop into more well-rounded journalists and broadcasters.”

The 2018 QUTV Broadcasting Boot Camp runs Monday, Aug. 13 through Thursday, Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Quincy University’s North Campus B building.
