State Senator Jil Tracy has sent a letter to Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, urging immediate action to address rising utility costs affecting families and small businesses in downstate Illinois.

In her letter, Tracy pointed out the pressing need for relief as residents in her district have reported that their power bills have doubled or tripled in recent months.

“Families in my district are being forced to make impossible choices just to keep the lights on,” Tracy said. “Energy affordability is the single biggest concern I hear from constituents, and the State must act quickly to bring meaningful relief.”

Earlier this year, Tracy introduced Senate Bills 1234, 1235, and 1236. These measures aim to provide cost savings and ease some of the provisions of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. Her office also collected more than 600 petition signatures from residents asking for immediate help.

Tracy is also a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 2687, known as the Home Utility Relief Act. This bill would create a rebate program through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for families whose incomes are between 100% and 500% of federal poverty guidelines. These households often do not qualify for traditional assistance programs but still face high utility bills.

“As Chicago lawmakers focus on priorities like the transit system, downstate legislators are demanding the same recognition for our residents’ struggles with unaffordable energy costs,” Tracy said. “We need Governor Pritzker’s partnership to deliver both immediate and long-term relief.”

Tracy is calling on Governor Pritzker to make energy affordability a priority during the upcoming Veto Session, saying it is essential for working families and small businesses across downstate Illinois.

Deputy Governor Andy Manar confirmed that their office received Senator Tracy’s letter.

Tracy was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois' 50th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Steve McClure.
