Stormy Leazer, a registered nurse at Blessing Hospital, was honored with the hospital’s 118th DAISY award on February 16. The DAISY award is an international recognition for nurses who provide exceptional care and make a significant impact on patients’ lives.

Leazer works as part of the Radiology Vascular Access team and met the patient while assigned to the Cardiovascular Unit. The nomination for Leazer came from the niece of a patient she cared for. According to the nomination:

“My dad spoke about a nurse named Stormy during my aunt’s initial visit to Blessing, while I was in Florida. He told me my aunt was calmed by Stormy’s presence.

But I didn’t know how much Stormy was a comfort to my aunt until I saw it for myself in the room. Stormy walked in, hugged my aunt, sat on the edge of the bed, and held her hand to talk to her.

I remember my aunt telling Stormy, before her discharge to go home on palliative/hospice care, ‘You are an angel, Stormy. I know God picked you for a reason to care for me.’ Stormy responded that she was so grateful that God had chosen her to be there for her. They hugged, and we all shed tears at goodbye,” stated the patient’s niece.

The DAISY Award program began in 1999 after the family of a man who died from an immune system disorder created it in his memory. Since then, over 5,400 healthcare organizations and nursing education programs globally have joined the initiative.

Anyone connected with patient care—including patients themselves or their families—can nominate nurses for this recognition.
